PUNARJANI

Extending its foundational philosophy of providing quality higher education to the rural populace, St. John's College, Anchal finds it important to reach out to marginalized communities in Kerala with an awareness campaign. Since 2016, the college has been reaching out to the tribal communities of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary through annual medical camps. A dedicated team comprising of medical professionals, teachers, and students contribute to the welfare of tribal settlements by conducting comprehensive medical check-ups. With a primary aim to address malnutrition among tribal children, the camps offer essential medical treatments alongside the provision of nutritious food supplies, ensuring holistic healthcare and support to the marginalized communities. The forest department of Kerala has recognized this initiative as " PUNARJANI " and it has gained significant visibility through coverage in national media.

Objectives of the Practice:

The overarching aim of this initiative was to meticulously assess the health and nutrition status of children below the age of 15, providing crucial insights into the well-being of marginalized communities.

The Context:

Situated within the verdant expanse of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, this initiative unfolded through the establishment of a medical camp in the tribal settlements—a region with a dense population of indigenous communities. A harmonious collaboration between the Kerala Forest Department, St. John’s College, Anchal, and St Joseph’s Mission Hospital, Anchal, catalyzed the realization of this venture. Conceived under the auspices of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St. John’s College, the program received a positive response from the tribal residents of the area.

The enchanting backdrop of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, with its rich biodiversity and unique ecological setting, served as a poignant setting for an initiative driven by a profound commitment to the health and well-being of the vulnerable communities dwelling within its confines.

The Practice:

The medical camp, a cornerstone of this comprehensive initiative, spanned four transformative days, commencing on the 3rd and culminating on the 6th of September 2016. This period witnessed a meticulous screening process, a blend of compassion and medical expertise, which focused on a cohort of 143 children. This group, symbolic of innocence and potential, comprised 58 children below the age of 5 and 85 children aged between 5 and 15.

Subsequent iterations of the camp unfolded like chapters in a story of resilience and commitment. In March 2017 and February 2019, the initiative revisited its mission, screening 206 and 183 children, respectively. The age demographics of the children examined in these subsequent camps mirrored those of the inaugural camp, underscoring the enduring commitment to comprehensively understanding and addressing the health needs of these young souls.

The program, marked by its initial triumph, manifested not merely as a transient intervention but as an enduring commitment to delivering vital insights into the well-being of these vulnerable communities. Yet, as the world grappled with the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the continuity of the camps faced a temporary suspension—a testament to the unprecedented times that demanded collective sacrifice.

However, resilience and adaptability emerged as defining attributes of this initiative. In the face of adversity, the program recommenced in 2022, navigating the complexities imposed by the pandemic, and sustained its momentum through 2023. The triumphant revival of the initiative underscored not only its resilience but also its unwavering commitment to its mission, proving efficacious in its pursuit of better health and nutrition outcomes for the young denizens of Chinnar.

The Health and Nutrition Assessment Initiative in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion, and commitment. The enchanting wilderness of Chinnar became a canvas upon which a narrative of health, resilience, and community well-being was painted. As the initiative forges ahead, its story continues to unfold, promising hope and transformation for the vulnerable communities it serves.

Evidence of Success:

The resounding success of the Health and Nutrition Screening initiative in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary echoed deeply within the tribal community, resonating as a symphony of positive change. The enduring acceptance garnered during the initial phases became the cornerstone for the sustained continuation of the program, surpassing the boundaries of its nascent years. This profound resonance underscored the program's significance in the lives of those it sought to uplift—the marginalized children dwelling within the sanctuary.

The initiative, rooted in its unwavering commitment to understanding the complex interplay of health and nutrition among these vulnerable communities, emerged as a transformative force. Its consistent impact played a pivotal role in providing indispensable information that transcended statistical data, reaching into the heart of communal well-being. The success was not merely measured in numbers but in the tangible improvement in the lives of the young denizens of Chinnar.

The resonance of success was not confined to the metrics of health screenings alone. It permeated the social fabric, fostering a sense of empowerment and trust within the tribal community. The program became a catalyst for community engagement, breaking down barriers and fostering a collaborative spirit between the community and the institutions involved. The enduring acceptance reflected a genuine recognition of the initiative as a beacon of positive change.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

The narrative is silent on the challenges confronted during the implementation of this commendable initiative. Behind every triumph lies a journey fraught with obstacles, and acknowledging these challenges is imperative for a holistic understanding of the initiative's resilience and adaptability.

Likewise, the provided information lacks insight into the resources that were instrumental in bringing the program to fruition. A comprehensive account of the resources mobilized—be they financial, human, or logistical—would not only enhance the transparency of the narrative but also serve as a guide for future initiatives seeking to replicate and build upon this success.

Future reports would benefit greatly from a candid exploration of the hurdles encountered, from logistical complexities to community-specific challenges. Documenting the resources mobilized, whether they be in the form of partnerships, expertise, or financial support, adds depth to the narrative, enabling a more nuanced understanding of the initiative's dynamics. Learning from challenges and understanding the essential resources ensures that subsequent initiatives are better equipped to navigate complexities and contribute meaningfully to the well-being of marginalized communities.
